What is a fault in pickleball, and who may call one?

A fault is a rule violation that ends the rally with a dead ball. Players should call their own or their partner's faults. Against an opponent, a player may call only a non-volley-zone fault or service foot fault; other suspected faults may be mentioned after the rally but cannot be enforced by that opponent.

Most faults occur while the ball is live. Momentum from a volley entering the non-volley zone is an exception that can remain a fault after the ball becomes dead. A referee's authority in officiated play is addressed separately.
